UNC Quarterback Drake Maye Ranked No. 3 in ESPN’s Top 10 Quarterbacks for 2023
The North Carolina Tar Heels will host their Spring game this Saturday, and quarterback Drake Maye is sure to be a highlight once again. After a standout 2022 season, Maye has been named one of the top quarterbacks in college football and a legit Heisman contender. ESPN ranked Maye No. 3 on its list of the top 10 quarterbacks for the 2023 season, with only Caleb Williams and Michael Penix Jr. ranked ahead of him.
Maye’s impressive season last year is a big reason for the excitement surrounding the upcoming season. He started 14 games and won ACC Player of the Year, ACC Offensive Player of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year, and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year. His ability to make plays with his arm and his legs set multiple single-season records, including passing yards and passing touchdowns, and put him in contention to be the No. 1 draft pick if he had been eligible.
Maye will have to break in a new group of receivers this year and work with new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey after Phil Longo left for Wisconsin. But his elite skill set and quarterback expertise will put him in position to shine once again, and prove his worth as a top quarterback.
While some analysts rank Williams and Maye as the top two quarterbacks for this year, ESPN’s ranking puts Maye in a unique position to prove himself as a top contender. Maye received one first-place vote out of 12 voters, and a total of 93 points in the rankings.
