College football fans are in for a treat this week as many teams across the country hold their spring games, providing a sneak peek at the 2023 season. For many programs, these games will offer the first look at their incoming true freshmen and highly-touted recruits as they transition to college football.
Some of the most highly-anticipated true freshmen include quarterbacks Arch Manning (Texas) and Nico Iamaleava (Tennessee), and wide receivers Carnell Tate (Ohio State), Zachariah Branch (USC), and Omarion Mizell (Florida).
Mizell was a four-star recruit and the nation’s No. 100 overall prospect from the 2023 cycle, according to On3’s Industry Ranking. “Some Florida players are already saying Mizell is the fastest player on the team,” says On3’s Charles Power.
Mauigoa, a Five-Star Plus+ recruit, was the No. 2-ranked recruit in the state of Florida from the 2023 cycle and the crown jewel of Miami’s recruiting class. “We considered Francis Mauigoa as one of the highest-floor offensive linemen in the 2023 cycle,” Power said.
Jonathan Bax, a three-star prospect, was ranked as the No. 25 linebacker prospect by On3’s own evaluators. In his senior year, he rose up the rankings and is getting first-team reps for TCU.
Peter Woods, a five-star recruit and the No. 19-ranked prospect in the country, is the talk of the spring at Clemson. Woods is an aggressive and technically refined defensive lineman who looks primed to make an instant impact.
Other true freshmen to watch include Albert Leacock (Tennessee), the No. 12 receiver in the country, Raylen Wilson and CJ Allen (Georgia), and Justice Owens (Texas A&M), who was the No. 3-ranked running back from the 2023 cycle.
No matter who the standout players are, there’s much to look forward to in this week’s slate of spring games.
