Unpacking the Decline of the Boise State Football Program: A Look at the Turning Points

April 20, 2023 by CFB Report Leave a Comment

The Boise State Broncos have struggled in recent years, failing to make it into any polls since 2020 and not being ranked since 2019. This is a far cry from their peak in 2010, when they were ranked 2nd in the country. There were several turning points in the program’s history that contributed to a slow but steady decline. These include penalties imposed by the NCAA for providing improper benefits to freshmen players, the loss of several key coaching staff and high-profile players due to character issues or personal conduct, and struggles on the offensive line due to coaching turnover and inconsistent play.

One of the key turning points was the so-called “Couch Gate” scandal, where the football program provided improper benefits to incoming freshmen players. While the penalties were deemed too harsh by the NCAA, the incident led to instability in the athletic department and the firing of longtime athletic director Gene Blaymaier.

Another turning point was the change in offensive strategy under offensive coordinator Robert Prince, which saw the team switch from a pro-style offense to a spread offense. The new strategy proved ineffective and led to predictability and frustration on the field.

High-profile departures of coaching staff and players due to character issues also contributed to the program’s decline. This included players being kicked off the team due to sexual assault investigations and off-field behavior, and frequent turnover of offensive and defensive coordinators.

Finally, poor play on the offensive line led to struggles on the field and contributed to the team’s failure to win conference championships or make it to NY6 Bowls. While the team has shown some improvement in recent seasons, these issues have left them as an above-average mid-major program rather than a powerhouse.
