Iowa Football’s Surprising College Football Playoff Potential with Addition of Transfer Quarterback and All-American Punter

April 21, 2023 by CFB Report Leave a Comment

The Iowa Hawkeyes have added instant talent to their roster via the transfer portal and the help of NIL, acquiring Michigan transfer quarterback Cade McNamara, who can upgrade the most important position on the field. The Hawkeyes also added Nick Jackson from Virginia and have a talented back end, making the secondary a strong point for the team to lean on. With the addition of preseason All-American punter Tory Taylor, the Hawkeyes’ special teams unit is firmly established despite the difficulty of putting all three components together. The team has the potential to be a surprise College Football Playoff contender.

However, Iowa’s front seven presents the biggest task at hand on defense as they aim to slow down opponents’ running games and force them into throwing the ball. Additionally, the offense may struggle if the Hawkeyes cannot get productivity from the quarterback position, though Kaleb Johnson’s return should fare well with the ground game behind an offensive line that aims to take necessary steps forward.

Yet, on offense, Iowa will receive stronger quarterback play thanks to McNamara and Erick All, who will step in for former starter Sam La Porta. Despite some question marks around the offense and the potential loss of key defensive starters, Iowa should remain near the top of the Big Ten and FBS.

Finally, the article provides readers with statistics from ESPN’s initial Football Power Index rankings and encourages signing up for the Hawkeyes Wire newsletter.
