Nick Saban says Alabama needs to raise their game this season after replacing coordinators and quarterback

April 22, 2023 by CFB Report Leave a Comment

Nick Saban, the coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, has stated that he agrees with the analysis of the fan base, arguing that the team needs to raise their game from last season. While speaking about Georgia’s recent rise in the sport, Saban pointed to the lasting legacy of his coaching tenure at Alabama since 2007. He claimed that Georgia has been performing well on the field in the past two years, but consistency and the graduation rate have been the key to their success. Saban also praised Georgia’s program but stated that success is not a continuum for anyone, and consistency is the goal for Alabama.

Alabama has replaced both coordinators and their starting quarterback, raising the question of whether it can reestablish itself as the best in the SEC West, conference, and the country. According to ESPN’s Preseason Football Power Index, Alabama is ranked No. 2, with a 20% chance of winning the national title behind No. 1 Ohio State. Alabama has been rebuilding due to mistakes and inconsistency, and consequently, Saban hired 30-year-old offensive coordinator Tommy Reese and brought back long-time defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to revamp the team. Saban said the team still needs to work as the returning production is low (40%).

Alabama has gone all out this spring to get ready for the College Football Playoff, including going to Top Golf, having more team meetings, and talking to former players. The team is more focused on developing a brotherhood this season, and Saban has insisted that mental preparation is needed at every level of the team. The success of the team depends on how well the new young teammates adapt to the team. With a lot of upcoming competition in the SEC and with Texas coming to town in Week 2, there is not much time for Alabama’s quarterback competition to make any errors.

Alabama is facing challenges this season as success is not a continuous process. The team lost two road games last year, and it has been two seasons without a championship. Their record from last year doesn’t categorize them as the best, but they have won 15-year consistency and performance instead.  The Tide is facing a unique challenge with the need to replace coordinators and a Heisman-winning quarterback simultaneously while re-establishing their position as the champion.
