Florida State Seminoles’ Defensive Tackle Enters Transfer Portal: What’s Next for Joshua Farmer?

April 25, 2023 by CFB Report Leave a Comment

Defensive tackle Joshua Farmer has announced his decision to enter the transfer portal, placing his future with the Florida State Seminoles in question. Farmer, a redshirt freshman, played in all 13 games, earned Freshman Honorable Mention All-American status by College Football News, and was named the Devaughn Darling Defensive Freshman of the Year. He led all ACC freshmen in tackles for loss and finished the season with 15 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, and one quarterback hurry.

Despite arriving in Tallahassee with a raw skill set, Farmer improved considerably under coach Mike Norvell’s staff and was able to work his way into the two-deep at defensive tackle. However, he may be looking for NIL opportunities outside of Tallahassee as he tests the transfer market.

Before joining the Seminoles, Farmer was a four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 43 defensive end in America and the No. 65 overall prospect in Florida by ESPN. He was also ranked as the No. 40 nationally at his position and the No. 89 prospect in Florida by 247Sports Composite. As a three-year starter for Gadsden County, he helped the Jaguars reach the semifinals of the 2020 Florida Class 4A state playoffs and earned first-team All-Big Bend recognition as a junior.

This development could hurt the Seminoles’ defense, which improved significantly last season despite struggles in years past. However, with a young, talented coaching staff in place, the team could continue to improve and excel even without Farmer.
