The NCAA transfer portal has created a form of free agency for college sports, with football most affected by shuffling big-name talent, particularly at quarterback. Shehan Jeyarajah of CBS Sports evaluated the transfer portal quarterback class to 2023 season, with the four tiers linked to expectations. Graham Mertz, once the most exciting quarterback recruit in Wisconsin history, is now at Florida and listed in the fourth and final tier of players who are looking to take the next step. Billy Napier’s program is in dire need of a reliable signal-caller under center, and Mertz must win the starting job over former transfer Jack Miller. It is yet to be determined if Mertz is capable of meeting the lofty expectations his new program has for its starting quarterback.
