Senator Amy Galey of North Carolina has called on Governor Roy Cooper to rescind his executive order on regulating name, image, and likeness (NIL) contracts for college athletes to keep North Carolina colleges competitive. Arkansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma have passed or introduced bills that have given schools and athletes greater flexibility when it comes to NIL; for example, Oklahoma’s bill would prevent the NCAA from investigating or punishing schools or collectives for any NIL-related activities. The NCAA has called for federal legislation on the issue, stating that some states’ movements on NIL strengthen the case for federal legislation. More than 650 UNC athletes reported NIL deals last year.
