The Detroit Lions should consider drafting tight end Darnell Washington from Georgia despite the team’s recent track record with tight ends, according to an analysis. NFL draft evaluators haven’t ranked Washington first due to his value being entirely scheme-dependent, but his abilities could make him an ideal choice for the Lions. His wide frame and giant hands make him an ideal target for a pass-focused game, and his athleticism challenges linebackers and safeties alike. Additionally, his blocking abilities could help unlock dynamic possibilities in both the passing and running game of Detroit. While Washington’s ceiling likely lies as a secondary option in a team’s passing attack, acquiring him would open up options in the playbook that would offer another pass-catching option out of a jumbo set. Although he is unlikely to make it to Detroit’s first second-round pick, the Lions have the draft picks necessary to maneuver around or trade up to select him.
