The Seattle Seahawks have selected Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon as their newest addition to the team’s secondary. During his senior campaign, Witherspoon achieved a career-high of three interceptions and 17 passes defensed. He also showcased impressive run support skills, contributing 41 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.
Pro Football Focus (PFF) has ranked Witherspoon as the top cornerback in the nation. According to PFF, he allowed just 35.5% of the 62 passes thrown his way to be completed, with no touchdowns allowed.
For the 2022 season, Witherspoon earned Consensus All-American honors and was named the Big Ten’s Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year. This prestigious award had not been won by a Fighting Illini defender since its inception in 2011.
Surprisingly, Witherspoon did not begin playing football until his junior year of high school. After only one year of playing, he was named the Pensacola Defensive Player of the Year by the Pensacola News Journal.
Witherspoon’s aggressive style of play and competitive nature have impressed many insiders. Former Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith said that Witherspoon has the “full package at the cornerback position” and is “really good in off-coverage.”
Overall, Witherspoon is an exciting addition to the Seattle Seahawks and will undoubtedly strengthen the team’s secondary in the upcoming season.
