Long before the divisions of the SEC East and West, conference scheduling was more like the ‘Wild West’, where matchups were chosen based on win probability and co-champions were declared because undefeated teams did not play each other. Opponents were arranged or cancelled because of personal relationships and even teams that were natural rivals went decades without playing each other. Long before the SEC exerted its control on scheduling, two coaches could have a gentlemen’s agreement to avoid playing each other, and that was that. There were no parameters in place to make them play, and Bowls could invite whom they wanted, so if coaches could avoid playing each other, that’s just what they would do. Between 1953-1972, Auburn and Ole Miss only met twice, and even the iconic Iron Bowl was not played at all for 41 years. Swampy and stifling road trips meant that travel budgets were a consideration, and travel was harder in those days. Geography played a part in some matchups or lack thereof, although in the late 1960s the conference finally agreed on some semblance of rotating: two permanent opponents and rotating everyone else. The SEC presidents “urged the football operatives to work out a better schedule” in the late 1950s. Furthermore, coaches often scheduled as they pleased, conference best interests notwithstanding. All other major leagues operate on a round-robin basis; the SEC still loads up on mediocre non-conference foes.
