A former Michigan Wolverine has made a surprising move and is now a part of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Joey Velazquez, a Columbus native and DeSales High School graduate, has transferred to Ohio State as a walk-on for the 2024 season.
The linebacker, standing at 6-foot and weighing 222 pounds, played in 16 games over the course of five seasons with the Wolverines. His appearances were scattered throughout his career, with one game played as a freshman in 2019, 10 games as a redshirt sophomore in 2021, and five games as a redshirt junior in 2022. He did not see any action in the 2020 or 2023 seasons, and he finished his Michigan career with eight tackles and one fumble recovery.
In addition to football, Velazquez also played baseball at Michigan, where he was a four-year letterwinner as an outfielder. He contributed to the team's success by helping them advance to two NCAA Regionals in 2021 and 2022. In a total of 100 games played, Velazquez made 68 starts and had a batting average of .255. He recorded 17 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, and 51 RBIs. However, it has been confirmed that Velazquez will solely focus on football at Ohio State.
Recently, Ohio State's linebacker room gathered together to watch Super Bowl LVIII, and a photo was shared by graduate assistant James Laurinaitis. In the picture, Velazquez can be seen in the back wearing a black Nike jacket. The camaraderie and dedication shown by the Buckeyes are evident in this image.
Ohio State fans should be excited about this new addition to their team. With Velazquez's experience and skills from his time at Michigan, he will surely bring a fresh perspective and contribute to the Buckeyes' success on the field. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting transfer and the upcoming season.
