Led by former coach Mickey Matthews, the Dukes clinched their first-ever NCAA football championship. Coach Matthews and his team achieved an incredible feat during the 2004 season. Despite not playing a home playoff game, the Dukes emerged victorious in all four of their Division I-AA postseason matchups, ultimately securing the championship title. Their success not only brought acclaim to the football program but also played a significant role in JMU's promotion to the Bowl Subdivision starting in 2022.
One particular game from that season stands out as a historic moment. In order to accommodate a night-time slot on ESPN2, temporary lights were installed at William & Mary's Zable Stadium. This marked the first night football game in Tribe history and left a lasting impression on both the players and the fans. Inspired by the electrifying atmosphere, William & Mary soon installed permanent lights at their stadium.
The Dukes went on to defeat William & Mary with a score of 48-34, avenging their earlier regular-season defeat. They carried their momentum into the championship game in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where they faced off against Montana. Despite the challenging conditions of a clumpy field, JMU emerged victorious with a final score of 31-21, solidifying their place in history. Since that unforgettable season, the Dukes have never had a losing football season.
The induction ceremony at the Atlantic Union Bank Center on September 6th will not only honor Coach Matthews but also recognize several other outstanding athletes. Among them are softball pitcher Meredith Rowland, women's basketball head coach Betty Jaynes, women's soccer forward/midfielder Annie Young, two-sport athlete Julie Bowles, and baseball infielder/outfielder Greg Miller.
