Minnesota Vikings Eyeing Jared Verse as Potential First-Round Pick, ESPN Analyst Predicts
The Minnesota Vikings may have their eyes on a player familiar to North Dakota State football fans, according to Field Yates, an NFL Draft analyst for ESPN. In his recent mock draft, Yates predicts that the Vikings will select Jared Verse, an edge rusher from Florida State, with the 11th overall pick.
The Vikings' potential interest in Verse stems from their need to bolster their pass-rushing capabilities. Losing key players like Danielle Hunter, D.J. Wonnum, or Marcus Davenport in free agency could leave the team lacking in this crucial area. Selecting Verse would help address that concern.
Verse, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 260 pounds, began his college career at the University of Albany before transferring to Florida State. During his time at Albany, Verse faced off against the Bison in a game at the Fargodome. In that contest, NDSU emerged with a 28-6 victory, while Verse contributed eight tackles, one sack, and a forced fumble.
During his tenure at Florida State, Verse showcased his skills with 41 total tackles, including nine sacks, along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He played a significant role in Florida State's strong defense, which was considered one of the best in college football last season.
Before transferring, Verse played 15 games for Albany, amassing 52 total tackles and 9.5 sacks in the 2021 season alone. His performance earned him a reputation as a formidable edge rusher.
Yates is not the only ESPN analyst to predict the Vikings selecting an edge rusher in the first round. Matt Miller also projected the Vikings to take Dallas Turner, a linebacker from Alabama, with the 11th overall pick in his mock draft.
Danielle Hunter and D.J. Wonnum currently lead the Vikings' pass rush. Hunter had an impressive 16.5 sacks last season, while Wonnum recorded eight sacks. However, with the uncertain futures of both players, it's crucial for the Vikings to explore options like Verse to strengthen their defensive line.
The NFL Draft is scheduled to take place from April 25-27 in Detroit, Michigan. As the event draws nearer, the speculation surrounding the Vikings' potential draft choices continues to intensify.
