Washington Star Receivers Rome Odunze and Dillon Johnson Declare for NFL Draft After Impressive Seasons
Washington star receiver Rome Odunze and running back Dillon Johnson have both declared for the NFL Draft after impressive seasons, according to ESPN. Odunze, who is expected to be one of the first receivers selected in the draft, had a standout career at Washington and earned first-team All-America honors in 2023. Johnson, a transfer from Mississippi State, also had a productive season and showed dedication by playing through injuries. While their departures will be a loss for the Huskies, it signifies the next step in their football journeys.
Odunze's decision to leave Washington is not surprising given his success and the fact that he had already played four seasons. His performance in the 2023 season demonstrated his potential as a professional player, with 92 receptions for 1,640 yards and 13 touchdowns. Johnson, on the other hand, had a career-best game against USC with 256 yards and four touchdowns. He finished the season with 1,195 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns.
Odunze is considered the No. 7 overall prospect and the No. 2 receiver in the 2024 CBS Sports NFL Draft Prospect Rankings, just behind former Ohio State star Marvin Harrison Jr. In recent mock drafts, Odunze has been projected as a top-15 pick, with the Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints as potential destinations.
With Odunze, Johnson, and other key offensive players leaving, Washington's offense will undergo significant changes as they enter the Big Ten in 2024. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr., along with star receivers Ja'Lynn Polk and Jalen McMillan, have also declared for the NFL Draft. Offensive lineman Troy Fautanu and tight end Jack Westover are also moving on. While the addition of transfer players Will Rogers and Jeremiah Hunter brings talent to the team, it will be a rebuilding year for the Huskies.
